Performance Solutions

The NCC sets performance requirements, and the standard route to meeting them is not the only one. Where a design cannot follow the prescriptive path, a performance solution demonstrates that it meets the requirement another way.

When It Helps

For designs the prescriptive route does not suit.

Heritage and existing buildings where the prescriptive route is impractical. Unusual geometry or use. Change of use in a building that was never designed for it. And any case where meeting the standard route would cost more than it is worth.

Identify the requirement

Exactly which performance requirement is in play, and what it actually demands.

Agree the method

How compliance will be demonstrated, settled before the work is done.

Documented assessment

A written report a certifier can rely on, with the reasoning shown.

Specialist coordination

Fire engineers or other consultants brought in where the solution needs them.

01

Scope the problem

We confirm whether a performance solution is the right tool — sometimes a design change is cheaper.

02

Method and fee agreed

Including any specialist input, so there are no surprises.

03

Report issued

Documented so it stands up on assessment.

Common Questions

Answers before you ask.

Is a performance solution a way around the code?
No — it is a route through it that the code itself provides. The requirement still has to be met; only the means of demonstrating it changes.

That is why the method is agreed before the work is done rather than after.

Sometimes. We will tell you at the scoping stage rather than halfway through.
